July Happenings at the History Center
Bartow, Fla (July 1, 2021) — Journey into Polk history this month at the Polk County History Center. The following programs and events will be held virtually and are open to the public and free of charge:
- July 10, 11 a.m., Zoom & Vroom: The Quad Cities
- This live program will be presented on the Polk County Government Facebook page, PolkCountyGovFL and available for replay on the PGTV YouTube page. PolkCountyFL.
- Polk City, Lake Alfred, Auburndale and Winter Haven share an impressive landscape dotted with expansive lakes near Interstate 4 and U.S. 27. The communities possess unique histories and are poised for modern booms as they make way for new industries and growing populations. Join us as we explore the historic Green Pond Cemetery, north of Polk City, with its ever present bronze sentinel; go pickin’ for antiques at the historic Biggar Building in Lake Alfred; explore downtown Auburndale and get your toes wet at Mac’s Beach, and in Winter Haven discover the legacy of work by contemporary architect Gene Leedy.
- This program includes both a virtual component and a self-guided driving tour. Contact Jayme Jamison to find out more information, JaymeJamison@polk-county.net or (863) 534-4381.
- July 17, 11 a.m., Architectural Tour
- Join us for an architectural tour of the History Center and discover the neoclassical architectural elements that define this iconic Polk County landmark. This month, we focus on how design reflected function in the courthouse. The architectural tour occurs at 11 a.m. the third Saturday of each month.
- July 31, 10 a.m., Genealogy Speaker Series: Latin America Genealogy By: Mica Anders, Anders Genealogical Services
- Latin American genealogy involves many different countries across more than one continent. It encompasses multiple languages and various races and ethnicities. There are, however, some commonalities throughout. In this class, led by genealogist Mica Anders, learn basic genealogy techniques and hear more about records and resources commonly used when researching your Latin-American roots.
